At HSCC, getting to know our canine residents and passing this information along to potential adopters is a task we take quite seriously. And we’ve come to the conclusion that the use of labels, such as those pertaining to breed or compatibility with others, just doesn’t work for us anymore. Though we have used labels like “dog friendly”, “cat friendly”, and “child friendly” in the past, these general categories often over-simplify the personalities and preferences of our dogs. As for breed, we rarely know the genetic lineage of the dogs entering our shelter. Though we could make assumptions or guesses about breed based upon appearance, research has shown that visual breed identification in dogs is very unreliable. In fact, studies have shown that only 2% of a dog’s DNA determines its appearance!
So rather than worry about misleading labels, we prefer to spend our time getting acquainted with the dogs’ individual personalities.
