Lost Cats

This page has been created in order to facilitate reunions between people and their lost cats.  Below you will find photos and basic information about stray cats who are currently residing at HSCC.  The ages are approximate.  Please note that this page is updated every couple of days and is not updated over the weekend.

If you have lost your cat:

  • Call the Humane Society of Chittenden County immediately and file a lost cat report.  We answer our phones Tuesday - Friday from 1 - 6 pm and Saturday from 10 am - 4 pm.  Our phone # is (802) 862-0135.

  • Be prepared to provide our staff with a detailed description of your cat as well as with information regarding when and where your cat went missing.  In addition it is helpful if you can email a photo of your cat to us at bestfriends@chittendenhumane.org.

  • Visit this web page regularly to see if your cat is here.  You may want to also check our available cats page if your cat has been missing for more than a week.

  • Post flyers around your neighborhood with a color photo of your cat (if possible) and a detailed description of your cat.  Be sure to include any identifying marks that make your cat unique, gender, age, size, color, name, your contact information, as well as information about when and where the cat was last seen.  Your neighbors might not realize that your cat is missing.  It is also advised that you post flyers at Police Stations and Humane Societies within a 60 mile radius of your home.  Cats sometimes travel.

If you feel that a cat listed might be your lost companion, please contact us (see above for our phone # and Adoption Center Hours).  You will need the following to reclaim your cat: a current photo of your cat and vet records to verify ownership.  The owner of the animal must visit HSCC in person to reclaim the cat.  We cannot release lost cats to friends or neighbors.  Please note that per Vermont State Statutes, stray cats are held at HSCC for seven days before being placed up for adoption.  If after that holding period you have not claimed your cat, he or she becomes the sole property of HSCC.  Also, depending on the duration of your cat's stay, we may ask for a donation for boarding and any medical care he or she has received while in our care.

**Please note that cats are listed by the date they arrived at HSCC.**
